1. Who we are
Checky (“we”, “us”) is a checkers app at checky.gg and in the Checky apps. If you have any question about your data, email [email protected].
2. Using Checky without an account
You can play, solve puzzles and take lessons without signing in. Your games, stars, ratings and progress are then kept only on your device, in your browser’s or the app’s own storage, not on our servers. All we receive are the anonymous usage statistics in section 4.
3. What we collect when you sign in
- Account details. Your email address, and your name if you sign in with Google or Apple. Sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication, a Google service. We never see your Google or Apple password.
- Your progress, so that it follows you between devices: your games against Checky’s bots (their moves, results and rating changes), your puzzle attempts and puzzle rating, the lessons and opening lines you’ve completed, and the stars you’ve won. Settings such as sound and dark mode stay on each device.
- Payments, if you subscribe to Checky Premium. On the web, payments are processed by Stripe. In the iPhone and Android apps, they’re charged to your App Store or Google Play account, and RevenueCat manages the subscription for us. We never see or store your card details. We do store your subscription status, which platform you bought it on, that platform’s customer identifier and your billing dates, so we can give you access to Premium.
4. Usage statistics
We use PostHog, on its servers in the EU, to see how Checky is used so we can improve it. It records things like the screens you open, the games you start and finish (which bot, and how they end), the puzzles you try, the lessons and opening lines you complete, and any errors, along with your type of device and browser.
- No cookies. Nothing is stored on your device for this, which is why there’s no cookie banner.
- If you haven’t signed in, you stay anonymous. PostHog counts visitors with a code made from your IP address and browser that changes every day, so you can’t be recognised from one day to the next. Your IP address isn’t kept.
- If you’ve signed in, what you do is linked to your account’s ID, a random code, so we can see how players get on over time. We never send PostHog your email address or name. Once you delete your account, nothing links that ID to you.
We use these statistics only to improve Checky, never for advertising.
5. How we use it
- To run Checky and keep your progress in step across your devices.
- To improve Checky, for example by using game and puzzle results to make the bots’ and puzzles’ ratings more accurate.
- To manage your subscription, if you have one.
- To email you about your account: sign-in links, receipts, and important changes to Checky.
We use your account and progress to give you the service you signed up for, and usage statistics because we have a legitimate interest in improving Checky. We don’t sell your data, and Checky has no adverts.
6. Who processes it for us
- Cloudflare runs the website and the server your app talks to.
- Neon stores your account and progress in its database.
- Google Firebase handles signing in.
- PostHog provides usage statistics, from its servers in the EU.
- Stripe processes payments on the web.
- Apple and Google process payments in their app stores, under their own privacy policies.
- RevenueCat manages app store subscriptions. It receives your app user identifier and purchase history, never your payment details.
- Resend sends account emails.
Some of these services store data in the United States. Where your data leaves the UK or the European Economic Area, it’s protected by the safeguards data protection law requires, such as standard contractual clauses.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your account and progress until you delete your account. If you simply stop using Checky, we keep them so you can pick up where you left off.
You can delete your account at any time: tap the profile button next to the settings gear, then Delete account. This removes your account and the progress saved to it from our servers. Progress saved on your device stays there until you clear it with Reset all progress in Settings. If you can’t sign in, see our account deletion page. A subscription bought through the App Store or Google Play has to be cancelled in your store settings.
8. Your rights
Under UK and EU data protection law (the GDPR), you have the right to ask for a copy of your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to receive it in a format you can take elsewhere, and to object to how we use it. To do any of this, email [email protected]. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office in the UK, or to your own country’s data protection authority.
9. Children
Accounts are for people aged 13 or over, or older where your country requires it. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from younger children. If you think a child has given us their data, email us and we’ll delete it.
10. Security
Your data travels encrypted, and only we and the services above can reach it. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable care to protect your data from loss, misuse and unauthorised access.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change matters to how we use your data, we’ll tell you in the app.
